****** WHAT'S IN THIS THEME *******

Here’s the lowdown on RevvedUp:

    * fully laid out using semantic HTML and CSS stylesheets — no tables used
    * semi-fluid three-column layout (content plus two-column sidebar)
    * thus, it’s heavily optimized for search engines (titles are more relevant, and content goes first in the HTML source)
    * validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional
    * its visual style is completely driven by stylesheets — the theme’s layout can be altered substantially by changing a few lines in the main stylesheet
    * every page carries an explanation (even error pages)
    * font sizes are not fixed — even on Internet Explorer, your readers can resize the fonts to help them read better
    * it makes use of elegant semitransparent PNGs
    * includes shortcut icon and custom pages for directory indexes, Apache error pages, and a complete archive page (these pages automatically integrate themselves when the permalink structure is updated, and show the right hyperlinks, whether URL rewriting is active or not)
    * several WordPress plugins have been conditionally integrated — if a plugin is available and enabled, its features will appear automatically, no editing needed
    * enhanced with JavaScript events (and still, it does not require JavaScript from your readers)
    * well-organized stylesheets for you to peruse and edit
    * distributed under the GNU GPL, version 2
    * compatible with WordPress 2.0.1 and later versions
    * plugins supported out-of-the-box: (not included with the theme)
          o bsuite
          o Days since birth
          o FancyTooltips
          o Fold Page List
          o Gravatars
          o Bread Crumb Trail Generator
          o LMB^Box Comment Quicktags
          o Optimal Title
          o Recent Comments
          o Related Posts
          o Search Reloaded
          o Subscribe me
          o Useronline
          o Jalenack’s Wordspew
          o WordPress XHTML validator

****** POST-INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS *******

Congratulations! You've successfully installed the RevvedUp theme for WordPress. Now it's time for you to perform a few short tasks in order to take full advantage of this theme.

UPDATING YOUR PERMALINK STRUCTURE

If you're using permalinks, you need to update your permalink structure. Here's how.

On your WordPress administration interface, go to Options -> Permalinks. Click the button named "Update Permalink Structure >>". WordPress will then update the permalink structure to take into account the special RevvedUp pages.

If your .htaccess file is not writable by the Web server, copy the .htaccess code that appears in this screen and paste it into your .htaccess file, deleting the old code.

Don't forget to to update your permalink structure again when you stop using the RevvedUp theme.

CHECKING THE FAVICON AND SPECIAL FEATURES OF THIS THEME

Once you've updated your permalink structure, make sure that the shortcut icon is loading. Visit the front page of your weblog and take a quick look at your browser's address bar. If you see an R in blue, you're all set. Please note that the favicon reference is supplied via LINK REL tags to your readers' browsers. Other static pages being served by your Web server will only display a shortcut icon if your blog is anchored to your Web server root (because the directive used on .htaccess to redirect favicon requests only works on the WordPress directory and its subdirectories).

Now go down to the calendar, and click the "Complete archives" hyperlink that appears below it. If you see the complete archive page appear, everything is OK.

Now, if your Web server has directory indexes enabled, browse to your WordPress content folder (usually named "wp-content", so you'd probably have it at http://your.blog.address/wp-content/). You should see a directory index, themed by RevvedUp.

Finally, check error pages. To do so, upload a file to your wp-content folder, and change its permissions so nobody (not even the Web browser) can read its contents (usually, a "chmod 000" does the trick). Try browsing directly to the new file's URL through your Web browser, or clicking it on your directory index of "wp-content". You should see an error page titled "Forbidden". If you see it, everything is okay.

PERSONALIZING YOUR THEME

The first stop should be the theme options page. To get there, open the Presentation tab in your WordPress administration interface, then navigate to the RevvedUp sub-tab. You can add extra code which will appear under the About this site heading on the sidebar.

After that, what about changing the color palette of your site? Take a quick look at the style.css file, and change the colors so they suit your tastes better. The semitransparent background PNGs are something you will need to change as well.

Evidently, I would not expect your weblog to carry my picture (although it would be a nice vote of confidence if you did). If you want to place your own picture or clip-art image, edit the image named background.jpg in the RevvedUp template folder. I recommend placing a picture of yours. It's one sure way to give your blog an identity of your own.

SETTING UP YOUR OWN BANNER ADVERTISING CODE

Older versions of this theme included my Google AdSense banner code. This is no longer the case.

Ads can be configured in the theme options page. To get there, open the Presentation tab in your WordPress administration interface, then navigate to the RevvedUp sub-tab. From there, you can elect whether to place banner code or not - placed code will show up on strategic locations, and comes pre-styled as per the ad-styles.css file. Take advantage of the styles defined in that file, together with the HTML elements defined for each of the ad types, to style your own banners and define placements, margins, alignment, and so on.

(ideas for your advertising code: if your banner ads work out okay, and you become rich through your weblog, send a PayPal donation to rudd-o@rudd-o.com and share some of the profits!)
